A question we are frequently asked is: “How many samples do I need to send for testing?”
The answer depends on the type of testing you require and the applicable product standard. However, there are some general principles that can help you plan ahead.
Type approval testing
If you are submitting a product for type approval or full standard testing, you will need to provide, as a minimum, the number of samples specified within the relevant product standard.
Most respiratory protective equipment (RPE) standards clearly define the required sample quantities. This information is typically summarised in a ‘summary of requirements’ or ‘test schedule’ table within the standard. These tables outline:
- The requirement clause and corresponding test clause.
- The number of samples required per test.
- Associated requirements
- Any pre-conditioning requirements.
As a guide, manufacturers should always be prepared to supply at least this minimum quantity. However, in practice, we often recommend providing additional samples. There are two main reasons for this:
- Some tests are destructive. Once completed, the sample cannot be reused for further testing.
- Parallel testing improves turnaround time. When additional samples are available, we can run multiple tests simultaneously rather than sequentially. This can significantly reduce the overall project duration.
Providing extra samples at the outset can therefore help us deliver a faster, more efficient service.
For pre-approval/development testing
For pre-compliance, development, or investigative testing, the number of samples required is much more flexible. In these cases, the testing scope is typically defined by the manufacturer’s specific objectives. You may wish to:
• Assess performance against a single clause of a standard.
• Compare prototype variations.
• Validate a design change.
• Conduct exploratory performance checks.
As this type of testing is tailored to your needs, the sample quantity is largely determined by the scope you choose. We are always happy to advise on the most practical and cost-effective approach based on your development stage.
Planning ahead
Supplying the correct number of samples from the beginning helps avoid delays and ensures testing can proceed smoothly. If you are unsure how many samples will be required, we recommend contacting us early in your project planning phase.
Once we understand the product, the applicable standard and whether you require type approval or development testing, we can confirm exactly how many samples you will need and whether providing additional units could help accelerate your turnaround time.
If you have an upcoming project, why not get in touch with our team? We’ll be happy to guide you through the requirements and help you prepare for a smooth and efficient testing process.
