How long will my testing take?

One of the most common questions we receive from manufacturers and product developers is: “How long will my testing take?”

This is a perfectly understandable question. When you’re preparing a product for certification, regulatory approval or market launch, timelines matter. You need to plan manufacturing schedules, coordinate documentation and ensure the next steps of the process are ready for when testing has been completed.

At GCS, we pride ourselves on being responsive, service-driven and efficient and we always aim to deliver results as quickly as possible. However, the honest answer is that testing timelines can vary depending on several factors including the type of product, the standard being assessed and the scope of testing required.

Below, we outline some of the key factors that influence testing turnaround times and what you can expect when working with us.

Type of product being tested

Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) covers a wide range of products, from relatively simple disposable masks to complex breathing apparatus systems. Naturally, the complexity of the product influences how long testing will take. For example:

  • Negative pressure masks (such as EN 149 disposable masks or EN 140 re-usable half-masks) typically involve a defined set of laboratory tests which can often be completed relatively quickly once samples are received.
  • Powered air devices (such as those tested to EN 12941 and EN 12942) require additional performance testing, including duration tests, noise level tests and checking of warning device operation.
  • Breathing apparatus systems (such as those tested to EN 137) are more complex products involving multiple components and more complicated tests, such as flame engulfment and breathing resistance at high and low temperatures.
  • Airline supplied suits and protective ensembles (such as EN 1073-1 and EN 14594) may require extended testing durations due to the complexity of the equipment and the nature of the performance assessments.
In short, the more complex the system, the longer the testing programme is likely to be.

The scope of testing required

Another important factor is whether you require a full certification test programme or a smaller subset of tests. In some cases, manufacturers request full standard testing as part of product certification. This will involve completing all required tests within the applicable standard. In other cases, companies may only require:

  • Pre-compliance testing during product development.
  • Verification testing on design changes.
  • Specific performance tests for internal validation.

When only certain tests are required, the turnaround time can often be significantly shorter.

Sample preparation and documentation

Testing timelines can also be affected by how ready the product is when it arrives at the laboratory. For example, delays can sometimes occur if:

  • Samples arrive incomplete or not fully assembled.
  • Additional components or accessories are required for testing.
  • Documentation is missing or unclear.

Providing complete samples and clear information at the start of the project helps ensure testing can begin quickly and proceed without interruption.

Laboratory scheduling

Like any specialist laboratory, testing schedules depend on current project workload and equipment availability. While we always do our best to accommodate urgent requests, some tests require dedicated facilities or specialist rigs that must be scheduled in advance. This is why early engagement with the laboratory is always beneficial, particularly if you are working toward a fixed product launch deadline.

Our commitment to a fast, responsive service

Although timelines vary from project to project, we are committed to delivering testing as efficiently as possible. Our team works closely with customers to understand their objectives, prioritise urgent work where feasible and provide clear communication throughout the process.
We understand that testing is often a critical step in bringing products to market, and we aim to make that process as smooth and predictable as possible.

Planning your next project

Because every project is slightly different, the best way to understand how long your testing will take is simply to speak with our team. Once we understand the product, the applicable standard and the scope of testing required, we can provide a realistic timeline and help you plan the next steps.

If you have an upcoming project, why not get in touch with us? Our team will be happy to discuss your requirements and provide guidance on expected turnaround times.
